Our Procedure
We will:
- Inspect the floor carefully
- Punch nails and remove staples, etc
- Fill in holes and end-to-end gaps with closest matching wood filler
- Coarse sand the floor to ensure the colour is as even as possible
- Medium sand to ensure the colour is as even as possible
- Sanding edges is carried out simultaneously
- Scrape and sand corners
- Fine sand the whole floor to ensure maximum smoothness
- Vacuum the entire area with an industrial vacuum cleaner to remove all dust, etc
- Aplly first coat of polyurethane
- Inspect the floor after is has dried for flaws and imperfections
- Apply the next two coats with light sanding and vacuuming between.
Common Problems
- Some marks (thin but very deep cuts) around the edge of the floor, caused by carpet trimmers, rarely come out.
- Some minor marking on skirtings from contact with the polyurethane may occur.
- Sometimes there is a variation in colour between areas that have been protected differently over time, for example, areas covered with carpet compared to lino or tiles.
- Deep gouges may be minimised but are never completely removed.
- Unexpected stains sometimes appear. Animal urine stains and water stains around nail holes rarely disappear. Most superficial water stains can be sanded out.
- Floor boards damaged by borers absorb lacquer abundantly and are never as glossy as the rest of the floor.
